Born on St Patricks Day in 1950 and raised in Newcastle, Helen Cummings has had a remarkable life.
Today she lives not far from where her mother Joy (the former Lord Mayor of Newcastle) spent her teenage years. The ‘top end’ as she calls this part of Newcastle, is her most favourite place on the planet. She has three wonderful adult children, including Hollywood actress Sarah Wynter, and three grandsons.
Last year, a moving story that took two her decades to write was published. In her memoir “Blood Vows”, she describes herself as the daughter of a famous mother and mother of a famous daughter. Opening up her life to the world was not easy for Helen, but she believes her story needed to be told. It was worth it, Blood Vows is changing lives at every page.
Blood Vows took Helen out of her comfort zone. Helen’s mum and daughter Sarah were blessed with the “spotlight” gene, but for Helen it has been harder to adopt. She sees herself as a student of life, but has embraced this latest journey, finding it enormously gratifying and ongoing.
Helen has had an amazing influence on the legislation for domestic violence and child abuse. She set out to change this legislation, and to a large degree she has accomplished this, but still knows she has a long way to go until it is where it needs to be.
Helen loves to write, sing, play and continue her life practice of Yoga. She is an incredible inspiration to all women and is one of the warmest and compassionate people you will meet.
